Sustainability under Construction
The construction industry is responsible for about 50% of the UK’s carbon footprint, and the UK produces enough rubbish to fill Trafalgar Square every day.
As UK citizens working in the construction industry we feel that it is our duty to reduce the impact our company and its workers have on the environment.
Our contribution;
-
We encourage social inclusion by bridging the gap between job seeker and employer, ensuring that everyone who wants to, can benefit from a sustainable career.
- We have created positions within the company with responsibility for recycling and energy saving and we reward staff initiatives.
- We are members of the Centre of Alternative Technology and receive advice newsletters on green issues
- We are members of the Essex Wildlife Trust and have sponsored projects, including a ride on mower to provide firebreaks for wildlife at a local reserve
- We invested over £20,000 in software which handles our accounts and CIS payments because it allowed us to go paperless.
- When paper is required, we recycle our own waste paper through YoYo.
- We are working with the Environment Agency initiative, Sitewise to get the message across to the construction industry
- We share the commitment of the Olympic Development Authority and will ensure that young people and disadvantaged groups benefit from its success
“London 2012 and the London 2012 stakeholders share a commitment to maximise sustainability through the phases of the Games – building the venues and infrastructure, staging the Games themselves and then long into the future – focusing on five key areas: combating climate change, reducing waste, enhancing biodiversity, promoting inclusion and improving healthy living.”
